In my opinion, figuring out and constantly improving how your company best serves customers is a CEO’s main strategic responsibility. If you’re not giving the lifeblood of your revenue stream what they need, that stream will dry up.
Microdynamics Group found an opportunity to improve our organization and our relationships with clients a little more than 10 years ago. Here’s what we learned and how we did it.
Many things can be said about the value of color ink jet printing compared to the old “monochrome” print days. We were an early adopter in the ink jet movement (2004) because we saw the value in providing a true Trans Promo document to clients. We stayed patient while ink jet manufacturers worked to deliver on the promise of balancing cost & appearance. Big picture, we were patient with the technological development to fulfill my strategy for Microdynamics to convert as much work as we can into a WICO (white in color out) environment.
This not only adds value to the customer experience but also provides cost savings to boot. Here are the opportunities we’ve enjoyed by embracing an ink jet print production environment:
Operational Improvements – The operational pick up in not having to swap out rolls of paper every time you change jobs is huge. Each form swap out typically takes 10-15 minutes (assuming you have a quality operator). That process is eliminated once you job to an ink jet environment. In addition, the throughput of the ink jet printing systems allow for more production output in a smaller footprint, thus maximizing your real estate investment.
Cost – Operational costs are lower when you look at the total package price. There is obviously a significant upfront investment but the click, consumables, and labor savings make the ROI very attractive in a relatively short time window.
New business opportunities – Being a salesman at heart, this is where I get excited. With ink jet technology, I now have the ability to create almost any deliverable my customer desires, usually at a higher price point. The ability to “yellow pad” a statement layout with a client offers incredible value and solidifies our market position as “Proactive Advisors”.
Quality – The quality has come a long way since 2004. The days of “business color” are now replaced with 600-1200 dpi output. The capabilities of the ink jet systems have caught up, and in some incidences, exceeded the customers’ expectations.
For Microdynamics, adopting early and then being patient during a technological evolution has paid off with operational efficiency, a higher-quality product, and better relationships with our customers.
